About:

“Your Lie in April: The Musical” is a stage musical adaptation of the popular Japanese light novel series “Your Lie in April” (Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso) by Naoshi Arakawa. The musical is based on the original story, which was also adapted into an anime series in 2014.

It was adapted into a 22-part anime TV series in 2014, a Japanese live-action film in 2016, and a Japanese stage production in 2017. Story:

Your Lie in April’s backstory is laid out in the musical’s first song, showing the decline and fall of a gifted child. As a little boy, Kosei was a piano prodigy, a contest-winning machine, and a legend among his rivals. But his mother, who drove him to play in the first place, was never satisfied, forever driving him to do better. She died when Kosei was still small. Now a teen, Kosei is haunted by her specter, which is slow and limping on stage but seemingly indestructible in death, leaving Kosei cursed. When he touches the piano now, he can’t hear a single note.

Then a new girl transfers into Kaori’s high school. She’s a strange mix, singing angelically about perfection one moment, then thumping or bawling out Kosei the next. She already has a boyfriend – Kosei’s jock schoolmate Ryota – but she mysteriously knows Kosei’s musical history in detail. She’s also a musician, a violinist, and insists Kosei accompany her, despite the wretched boy’s protests. Effectively she’s trying to wrest him from his mother, who has seemingly unbeatable advantages, being both dead and ever-present.
